Knowsley Council has employed a team of Covid-19 Prevention and Support Officers to support its response to Covid-19.
The 5 officers are working across the borough to offer targeted advice to businesses, workplaces, communities and other identified settings on Covid-19 guidance, with the ultimate aim of reducing the spread of the virus.
The team are working with businesses and other premises to ensure the relevant Covid-19 prevention measures are in place for premises to be Covid-secure. They are carrying out regular spot checks across the borough and are supporting the Environmental Health, Trading Standards and Licensing services by responding to issues raised by staff and public in relation to issues such as lack of social distancing, failure to wear face coverings, inadequate track and trace measures (such as collecting contact details for customers) or failure to provide hand sanitiser.
So far, the team has found that most businesses welcome the advice and support and, while they were able to open, they were compliant and could keep their business open. Officers are engaging with business owners who are not complying with Covid-secure guidance and explaining the requirements and reasons for it. Where businesses choose to ignore advice and continue to breach regulations, enforcement action will be pursued through Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing services and Merseyside Police.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said:
“We are continuing to tackle the challenge of coronavirus and so it is essential we work together with our businesses and local communities to help to stop the spread of the infection. This team of officers are crucial to help businesses comply with Covid-19 regulations and guidance – for the safety of not only themselves, but their staff and customers too.
“If you are a customer or member of staff at any business in Knowsley and are concerned measures are not being followed please report it to our Environmental Health team who can work with the business and where necessary take robust action.”
