Knowsley Council has launched a Council Tax Sole Occupier Discount Amnesty, giving residents the opportunity to review and update their details without further checks.
The amnesty runs from 8 June 2026 to 5 July 2026 and applies to households currently receiving the 25% Sole Occupier Discount.
Why this is important
The discount applies where only one adult aged 18 or over lives in the property. The Council regularly reviews these accounts to ensure discounts are being applied correctly.
Who needs to act?
Residents should come forward if their circumstances have changed, for example if:
- A partner, lodger, tenant or relative has moved in
- Someone is staying at the property, even temporarily
- A child has turned 18 or returned to live at home
What happens during the amnesty?
Letters are being sent from 8 June 2026 asking residents to confirm their household details.
If you are no longer entitled to the discount and complete the declaration form by 5 July 2026, you can:
- Enter 8 June 2026 as the date your discount should end
- Avoid any further checks on your claim
What happens after the amnesty?
After 5 July 2026, a more detailed review will take place to identify households incorrectly claiming the discount.
