The Leader of Knowsley Council, Cllr Graham Morgan has condemned the actions of mindless thugs who have caused more than £10,000 of damage to the Eco Therapy Garden in Kirkby.
Over two separate evenings last week the community garden experienced extensive vandalism which has seen its greenhouse completely destroyed, sheds broken into, planters smashed, signage torn down and children’s play equipment damaged beyond repair.
Cllr Morgan said: “I am absolutely furious to have seen the devastation and upset caused by the mindless actions of a small number of people. The damage caused at the garden is horrendous and everyone involved – many of whom give their time voluntarily for the benefit of the community – are absolutely devastated by what has happened here.
“I’m incredibly proud of this invaluable community asset, which provides a range of support and services to residents, supporting their health and wellbeing, addressing social isolation and mental health issues as well as providing volunteering opportunities for local people.
“I know how hard Ange and the team of volunteers have worked on creating the offer they have and I really can’t understand why people have gone out of their way to cause the damage and inconvenience that they have. It really is unbelievable.”
The Eco Therapy Garden Community Interest Company aims to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents. It aims to tackle social isolation and mental health issues through its therapy garden and the combined services of talking and eco therapies. Powered by the support of local volunteers the Eco Therapy Garden provides a safe haven and space for local people to improve wellbeing and make social connections.
Cllr Morgan added: “We are doing all that we can to support the Ange and the team to get back up and running as soon as possible and ensure the community can once again benefit from this fantastic facility and offer provided through the Eco Therapy Garden.”
