Consultation to launch on the development of a new Local Plan

by Gemma Melling

Cabinet has today (Wednesday, 4 November 2026) approved the next steps of the development of a new Local Plan for Knowsley.

The Local Plan is the key statutory, long-term planning document created by local councils to guide development, manage land use, and address housing, infrastructure, and environmental needs.

The Council’s current Local Plan runs to 2028 and, under Government’s new plan making regulations, it is necessary to begin the production of a new Local Plan before 31 December 2026.

Following approval at Cabinet last month to prepare a new Local Plan, the next step now is to consult on the scoping document, which will run from 24 November 2026 until 5 January 2027. The scoping document provides an early opportunity for the local community and stakeholders to comment on what the Local Plan should contain and how they would like to be involved in the process of preparing the Local Plan. The draft scoping document can be viewed here.

Further details regarding the consultation will be shared before 24 November on the Local Plan page of the Council’s website, Knowsley News and the Council’s social media channels. In addition, you can also sign up to receive regular updates by emailing localplan@knowsley.gov.uk.
