As part of continued plans to develop and revitalise Kirkby town centre, Knowsley Council has completed the purchase of the Knowsley Community College Kirkby Campus site. The site, on Cherryfield Drive, is located on the edge of the town centre.
The college had expressed an intention to relocate its Kirkby campus into the heart of the town centre and remains committed to providing an education facility in Kirkby. The council’s purchase will now enable the college to progress the plans.
Principal of Knowsley Community College, Monica Box, said: “We are delighted that the purchase is now complete. We can now progress our plans to relocate to new premises in the heart of Kirkby Town Centre.”
“Securing accommodation closer to the town centre has been an ambition of the college for some time. We are completely committed to serving the needs of Kirkby residents, and are looking forward to establishing a new training centre in the town centre. We are very pleased with the progress we have made and are grateful for the support of the council to make this ambition come to fruition.”
Knowsley Council concluded a deal to purchase St Modwen’s assets in Kirkby Town Centre on 23 November 2019 and, just a few weeks later, started work on the site to bring forward regeneration plans. Phase one of the council’s plans includes the construction of the new retail development which includes a 45,000 feet2 Morrisons superstore, petrol station, a new store for Home Bargains, a drive-through KFC restaurant, and car parking.
A further phase of development will include a cinema scheme including food and drink outlets.
Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, added: “I’m delighted that our purchase of the College’s Kirkby campus site has now concluded. We will continue to support the college with their move into the town centre, further strengthening the local offer for residents and visitors alike. It is a very exciting time for Kirkby and I am really looking forward to seeing our plans progress over the coming months.”
Suggestions for the new college site, along with other development sites across the town centre, will be invited at a consultation event being arranged in the town centre next month. Further details will be published here on www.knowsleynews.co.uk once confirmed.
