Knowsley Council officers joined representatives from Tarmac to volunteer their time and help local charity ‘Pedal Away’ clean their stores and equipment at Court Hey Park in Huyton.
Pedal Away is a community based cycling scheme that enables people to ride, regardless of their age, ability, disability or cycling experience.
The hub where the charity store bikes and equipment at Court Hey Park has recently suffered from flooding during bouts of heavy rain. With the drainage issue fixed Pedal Away needed some help removing all the bikes to clean the hub, bikes and equipment.
Officers from Knowsley Council’s Highways team and the authority’s appointed highway contractor, Tarmac, were on site with mops and buckets washing bikes and helping clean out the storage unit.

Jonpaul Lowles, Pedal Away and Wheels for All Inclusive Cycling Coordinator for Knowsley, said: “Everyone’s hard work has been such a massive help. I’m absolutely over the moon with the support and effort given and I know the riders will be too!”
Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “It is great to see council officers and our partners volunteering to help this fantastic charity. Pedal Away provides great opportunities for Knowsley’s residents to get outdoors, improve health, meet new people and get involved with cycling. Thanks to all those involved.”
Brian Murphy, Tarmac Service Manager, added: “Brilliant to be part of a joint social value initiative, something we should be proud of! Thanks to those taking part and Tarmac look forward to many more similar opportunities over these next few years.”
