Find out if childminding is for you at drop-in information session

by Laura Johnston

If you love spending time with children and helping them develop and grow, childminding could be the ideal career for you.

You may also be eligible for up to £3,000 to support with your start-up costs.

We understand you’ll probably have lots of questions about childminding and this is where the council’s Early Years Service can help. Pop along to the information session on Wednesday 26 February, 6pm to 8pm at Our Place, Longview Drive, Huyton, L36 6EG. There’s no need to book, just turn up.

What do childminders do?

Childminders offer childcare and early education, looking after small groups of children of different ages from different families in your own home. Many childminders do this alongside looking after their own children.

If you become a childminder, no two days will be the same, but some of your daily responsibilities could include:

  • Encouraging children’s development using creative play, reading and storytelling
  • Providing learning activities, both indoors and outdoors
  • Planning, preparing, and serving healthy, nutritious meals and snacks
  • Speaking to parents and carers about their child’s day.

Childminders are self-employed, so you will be your own boss and running your own business from home. You’ll have access to free training and support and it can be hugely rewarding—financially, emotionally, and as a career-move.

A grant is currently available to all new childminders who register with OFSTED or a childminder agency before 31 December 2025.

You will also receive a full PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) toolkit which contains all the essentials to start your childminding business including templates for accounts, child record forms, registers and much more. Plus, you’ll get a free treasure basket resource.
