Celebrating Women’s History Month in Knowsley

by Laura Johnston

Every March, we pause to celebrate the contributions women have made throughout history and society during Women’s History Month.

This year, International Women’s Day (on Sunday, 8 March) marks a historic 115-year milestone of global advocacy and collective action toward gender equality.

What began in the early 20th Century as a movement demanding fair wages, safer working conditions and the right to vote has evolved into a global movement. In 2026, we don’t just celebrate how far we’ve come; we sharpen our focus on the work ahead—from closing the gender pay gap to amplifying the voices of women.

How Knowsley is marking the month

We are proud to show our support for this important month across the borough.

On Sunday 8 March, the Greystone and Archway Road bridges will be illuminated in purple—the international colour of justice and dignity.

Visit any Knowsley Library to explore themed displays featuring women writers past and present and stories of women who have shared their experiences and raised their voices for change and to stand up for their rights.

The Borrowbox online library will also feature a dedicated “Women’s History Month” section with e-books and audiobooks.

As individuals, we can all take steps in our daily lives to positively impact women’s advancement.

Sharing our knowledge and encouragement with others is key and we can call out stereotypes, challenge discrimination, question bias and celebrate women’s success.
