Celebrating Ukraine in the run up to Eurovision

by Lisa Bennett

The Council’s English as an Additional Language team and the Library Service have teamed up to host a range of Ukrainian celebrations in the run-up to the Eurovision final on Saturday 13 May 2023 (which Liverpool is hosting on behalf of Ukraine).

Throughout this week:-

  • Each of the borough’s libraries have been decorated bunting and flags.
  • Dance group Movema has performed Ukrainian dance in traditional costume followed by a workshop which included learning some Ukrainian dance steps.
  • Local school children from Prescot Primary School (Prescot), St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School (Huyton), St Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School (Kirkby), Meadow Park (Stockbridge Village), Plantation Primary School (Halewood) and Yew Tree Primary Academy (Halewood) have been joining in the activities that have been on offer at their local library, as well as partaking in Ukrainian snacks. Each child was also given a Ukraine flag to colour as well as a Eurovision quiz to do back at school.

Cllr Margaret Harvey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“It’s great to see our services come together to celebrate Ukraine and for children to have the opportunity to embrace some Ukrainian activities and their culture.

“The feedback from the sessions has been extremely positive and very well attended. Well done to everyone involved.”
