Celebrate pedal power this Bike Week

by Cathy Sheel

Knowsley Council is encouraging people to get on two wheels for Bike Week 2024, to save money, boost their health and the environment.

The annual campaign, organised by the charity Cycling UK, runs from Monday 10 June to Sunday 16 June, and aims to encourage more people to cycle to work and school during the week.

Want to give cycling a try?

If you’ve been meaning to give cycling to work or school a try but are lacking confidence, Pedal Away run cycling sessions at four hubs across the borough.

  • Stadt Moers Park, Pottery Lane, Whiston
  • Court Hey Park, Roby Road, Huyton
  • Westvale Youth and Community Centre, Kirkby
  • Halewood Environment Centre, Okell Drive, Halewood

The rides are pitched at a level so that anyone can join in no matter how long it’s been since you were last on a bike. All rides start and finish from one the hubs and if you don’t have your own bike and helmet, you can borrow one for a small donation (£2). For more information visit the Pedal Away website.

Wheels for All is an Inclusive Cycling programme enabling all children and adults with disabilities and differing needs to engage with quality cycling. They use adapted cycles such as handcycles, trikes and wheelchair transporters to assist in building confidence and independence in cycling.

Wheels for All is based at the Halewood Park Visitor Centre on Okell Drive (Meet at Halewood Environment Centre). Here’s more information about Halewood Wheels for All.

For residents who fancy getting out on their bike this week and cycling to work or school, plan your journey using Knowsley cycle map. Here’s  more information about travelling by bike in Knowsley and across the Liverpool City Region.

Better Transport Week

Better Transport Week is an annual, week-long celebration of the sustainable transport that makes our lives better.

This year, Better Transport Week takes place from 17 to 23 June with events, specials offers and competitions throughout the week. Whether you’re a passenger, pedestrian, car-sharer or cyclist, if you care about transport there will be plenty to get involved with.

Sustainable transport does amazing things. It shrinks traffic jams, cleans up our air and tackles climate change. It improves our health and boosts our economy. It connects us to the things that matter.
