As figures released by Public Health England today show an increase in the numbers of people in Knowsley testing positive for Coronavirus, local health experts are urging people not to panic.
The figures show that the number of people in Knowsley testing positive for Covid-19 has risen from 6 people per 100,000 to 20 people per 100,000. But these figures need to be understood in context. Whilst it is a reminder to us all to continue to observe social distancing and handwashing – these figures do NOT mean that Knowsley is heading for a ‘local lockdown’ as seen in Leicester.
Knowsley’s Director of Public Health, Sarah McNulty, explains more:
“Naturally we are concerned by any data that indicates an increase in the number of Knowsley residents testing positive for Covid 19.
“However, we must ensure that any figures are considered in context and in perspective. For example Leicester’s rate per 100,000 population is 140 – ours is 20 and not at a level that would indicate a serious cause for concern or for people to panic about.
“Similarly it is important to recognise that the number of people being tested in Knowsley has also significantly increased in the last week.
“We will continue to monitor the data closely however and urge our residents to continue to act responsibly – observing handwashing guidance, social distancing and if unwell, ensuring you book a test as soon as possible.
“In advance of lockdown restrictions being relaxed further this weekend this is a timely reminder for us all to continue to proceed with caution and help to limit the spread of the virus any further. ”
