Parents and carers are encouraged to catch up on any missed vaccines before the new school term begins.
Health professionals in Knowsley are highlighting the risk to unvaccinated children who are missing out on protection against preventable diseases – such as measles and whooping cough.
The risk increases as children start to gather together again in schools and nurseries following the summer holidays, meaning infections can easily spread among children who aren’t protected.
These infections can have a huge impact on a child’s life. They can miss out on school due to time spent unwell, be hospitalised, and even experience life-long complications and disability.
If a child isn’t vaccinated, they’re not protected.
It is important for parents to take up the offer of the free NHS childhood immunisation programme as soon as they are offered ensure children have the best protection.
If children have missed a vaccine, it is never too late to check if you can catch up.
Parents can check their child’s red book to see if children have missed any vaccines or check with their GP if they are unsure.
