Recommendations aimed at boosting recycling and reuse in Knowsley have been given the green light by the council’s Cabinet.
Knowsley Council’s Cabinet has approved all the recommendations from the Climate Emergency Scrutiny Committee’s comprehensive review into the borough’s waste and recycling services.
This measure reaffirms the Council’s commitment to enhancing local recycling services, encouraging sustainable resident behaviours, and achieving an ambitious “zero waste” future for the borough.
Cabinet’s endorsement signals a significant step forward in aligning local waste management strategies with the Knowsley Council Plan 2025-2030, and its priority to deliver effective, high-quality services and support for residents.
Implementation of the recommendations is expected to produce a measurable increase in recycling rates, less contamination in recycling bins and a reduction in residual waste collected per household.
Key recommendations included:
- exploring the feasibility of a new recycling facility within the Liverpool City Region, similar to the successful “Recycle for Greater Manchester Renew Hub.”
- Replicating innovative approaches to encourage resident behaviour change, such as the “Changing Behaviours” pilot.
- Thematic collections (e.g. electrical goods) with housing partners in ‘hard to reach’ areas.
- Integrating educational elements into waste enforcement through online awareness sessions.
- Greater engagement with schools to promote recycling.
- Engaging with community and voluntary organisations to raise public awareness of waste reduction initiatives.
Regular updates on the implementation of these recommendations will be reported, with a progress review scheduled for six months and an impact assessment after twelve months.
