Black History Month: celebrating black entrepreneurship in Knowsley

by Alison Cornmell

October is Black History Month – an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the many contributions made by black people in Britain over many generations.

Here we showcase the Council’s role in encouraging and facilitating black entrepreneurship in Knowsley, highlighting black businesses, Stunning Look Limited, and Creations By Viva which have received support from agencies including Knowsley Council Business Team, Knowsley Chamber of Commerce and Invest Knowsley.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said:

“Black History Month is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the many contributions made by black people in Britain. But it is important to remember that this just isn’t about one month alone. We are proud to support black entrepreneurship in Knowsley, giving these unique businesses the opportunity to thrive.”

Stunning Look Limited
Founded in 2020, Huyton based Stunning Look Limited specialises in the design, production and supply of African inspired clothing and fashion accessories. The company uses fabrics sourced from suppliers in West Africa to produce bold, vibrant, eye catching, colourful clothing. Founded by Precious Arowolo, the company recently secured funding under the Business Growth Programme to engage a business planning specialist for tailored business planning guidance and marketing advice.

Founder and Managing Director Precious Arowolo said: “Our long-term goal is to establish Stunning Look as a leading brand in African inspired fashion design that appeals to women of all ages and sizes. We originally invested personal capital to start the venture in 2020 but it has been a slow start due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We may not have realised the level of revenue growth we had anticipated when the business commenced trading in 2020, however, we remain optimistic about the future of the business because of the quality of our fabrics and our originality. We are particularly delighted to be receiving support from the Knowsley Business Team and Knowsley Chamber.”

Creations By Viva Limited
Creations By Viva is a Knowsley based new skin care and cosmetics brand. Based on ancient traditional African black soap formulations, founder and managing director Vanessa Boateng launched the organic skin care and cosmetics brand in 2020 and has secured financial support from Invest Knowsley.

Founder and Managing Director Vanessa Boateng said: “We may have a unique organic skin care and cosmetics brand, however, we also have challenges putting our products out there to the wider public. We were not sure about how to target, develop and expand our customer base. Having researched and developed our products, we needed expert guidance on business planning and marketing. We approached Invest Knowsley for help because although we knew there was demand for our products out there, we also recognise that we need a business plan to raise additional capital for investment in marketing and branding.”

Vanessa was also recently recognised by Knowsley Councillors for her work around social inclusion, integration, and the protection of children’s rights in the UK amongst migrants. You can read more about that here.
