Knowsley Council is launching a brand-new campaign, ‘Bin Smart – Recycle from the Start’, to help residents make the right recycling choices and reduce waste across the borough.
The campaign focuses on a simple message, small actions at home can make a big difference. By choosing the right bin from the start, residents can help to protect the environment, reduce costs, and make recycling more effective.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “Recycling has never been easier, and residents can now recycle more than ever before. With expanded services, and weekly food waste collections, we’re encouraging everyone to Bin Smart – Recycle from the Start.
“By putting the right items in the right bin, we can all reduce waste and make a real difference to our communities and the environment.”
Check before you chuck
Many everyday items still end up in the wrong bin. If you’re putting these in your general waste (maroon) bin, you could be missing an easy opportunity to recycle.
Use your grey recycling bin for:
- Cardboard
- Paper, newspapers and magazines
- Envelopes
- Food tins and drink cans
- Aerosols
- Glass bottles and jars
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic pots, tubs and trays
- Tetrapaks (e.g. milk, juice, soup cartons)
- Foil trays and tin foil
Top tip: Keep recycling clean, dry and loose – it makes all the difference.
Don’t waste your garden waste
Did you know garden waste can be recycled for free? Instead of filling up your general waste bin, use your blue garden waste bin to turn green waste into compost.
What goes in:
- Grass cuttings
- Leaves, plants and weeds
- Flowers and prunings
- Hedge and tree clippings
- Twigs and small branches
- Untreated bark and wood chippings
- Shredded paper
- Pet bedding – wood chippings, straw, hay and straw (Clean and Soiled)
Recycle your food Waste
Food waste is one of the biggest contributors to household rubbish – but it doesn’t have to be. With new weekly collections, residents can now recycle food waste easily using their caddy.
Most food can go in, including:
- Leftovers
- Fruit and veg
- Meat and bones
- Bread
- Tea bags and Coffee Grounds
Recycling food waste can reduce smells in your general waste bin, helps generate renewable energy and creates nutrient-rich soil. Remember no liquids can be put in your caddy and wrap all food in the caddy bags provided.
Give your clothes a second life
Instead of throwing textiles away, residents can use one of the borough’s 10 textile banks to recycle unwanted clothing.
Whether it’s old clothes, shoes or fabrics, these items can be reused or repurposed, helping reduce waste even further.

Have something bigger, or something that needs specialist recycling?
For items that don’t fit in your bins and to free up space, recycling centres are available for large household items, pillow, duvets and electrical items. Don’t forget this facility will also accept soil unlike your blue bin.
