Apprentices start work with Tarmac

by KMBC

Four young people from Knowsley are settling into new careers in construction and civil engineering after securing apprenticeships with leading UK company Tarmac.

The Operations Apprentices who live in Huyton, Kirkby and Prescot are all aged between 19-21. They will be based at the council’s Stretton Way depot in Huyton and will work as part of the Tarmac team delivering highways surfacing, bridge and structures maintenance, gully cleansing as well as footway and carriageway repairs across Knowsley.

Practical experience and qualifications

During the two year apprenticeship, Greg Black, Jack Donnelly, Craig Gordon, Thomas Higgins will study towards a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering Services with a focus on Construction Operations and General Construction.

Paul Fleetham, Managing Director, Tarmac Contracting, said: “We’re passionate about this industry, and want to inspire young people to start successful careers in construction. Our apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to gain a nationally-recognised qualification at the same time as developing practical experience and earning a wage. I’m really pleased to welcome our four new recruits and wish them every success.”

Knowsley Council awarded a five year, £30 million Highways Maintenance contract to Tarmac, which started on 1 February 2016. As part of the contract, a number of apprenticeships have been created by Tarmac as a commitment to creating local jobs and bringing young people into construction.
