Active Travel in Knowsley

by Lisa Bennett

A new series of short films is showcasing walking and cycling routes across Knowsley.

From Huyton to Prescot, Stockbridge Village to Kirkby, the East Lancashire Road and the Trans Pennine Trail, there are routes across the whole of the borough and connections to the wider Liverpool City Region.

Whether you are travelling to work, school or college, exercising or spending time with friends or family, Knowsley’s walking and cycling routes are easy to use and offer so many benefits.

Figures show that in the Liverpool City Region, over 300 million journeys that are taken by car are less than three miles long. Many of these could easily be made by cycling or walking.

It is estimated that if 80% of these journeys were made on foot or on a bike, it would help cut carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes a year. That’s the equivalent of taking over 50,000 cars off our roads every single year and in doing so would reduce traffic congestion, parking issues, and improve air quality for everyone.

As well as the environmental benefits, walking and cycling can also hope to save money that may otherwise be spent on fuel, parking, maintenance and insurance. It’s a great way to exercise and spend time outdoors which can boost your mental health. You can also meet new people by joining a local group.

Over the last 20 years, there has been significant investment in Knowsley’s active travel infrastructure and Knowsley now has a well-established and popular network of walking and cycling routes.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said:

“Our whole purpose with any active travel campaign is to help people travel by bike or foot more safely and with confidence and Knowsley has the networks in place for people to do that.

“These films will help people to change the way they think about travelling around their local area. There are so many opportunities to get travel actively around Knowsley and I hope that people feel inspired to get out of their cars and help to create a whole new generation of walkers and cyclists.”

Knowsley’s Active Travel films are funded through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Active Travel Capability and Ambition Fund.
