Action taken after ‘mischief night’ incidents

by Gemma Melling

Merseyside Police and Knowsley Council are reminding individuals taking part in antisocial behaviour that criminal actions will have consequences, following a number of mindless incidents in Knowsley on mischief night. One such incident, which saw a car damaged in Huyton town centre, was caught on CCTV.

Karl Baldwin, Superintendent for Knowsley said, “Like every year, our officers are working tirelessly to keep people safe over the Halloween and Bonfire period. Officers were out throughout last night, across Knowsley, keeping people safe and holding the small majority who go too far to account for their behaviour.

“We issued 30 Dispersal Notices to young people last night, stopping them from entering key areas for the next 48 hours. Additionally, officers arrested 3 individuals for public order offences. Several children and young people were taken home to their parents. We have already started to investigate the incidents that were reported and have already identified 7 suspects. We’ll be speaking to them over the coming days, including the suspect who committed criminal damage in Huyton town centre.

“My message is clear. It’s not minor to you, so it’s not minor to us. We’ll do everything in our power to identify, trace and hold those who choose to commit crime or anti-social behaviour over the Halloween or Bonfire period accountable.”

Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council commented: “The action taken by our Merseyside Police colleagues show clearly just how seriously we take incidents of ASB and criminal damage. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour no matter what day of the year it takes place. We won’t tolerate it in our communities.

“Our town centres and communities are well served by CCTV so whilst perpetrators of ASB may think they have got away with it, they may well be surprised when the Police turn up on their doorstep the next day.”
